Crescent kindergarteners invite parents to 'All About Us' night at school
By Kayla Thomason-
The event, dubbed "All About Us," gave kindergarteners an opportunity to show their families what they have been up to this year.
Students made posters about themselves, which were on display for their classmates and parents to see.
"It's a great connection for the families and the students get super excited to show off their school too," said Julie Gerth, kindergarten teacher at Crescent Elementary.
Allen Hoople, a student at Crescent Elementary School, said he liked showing his family "pictures about me." He also loved that his family got to have a free dinner.
The meal, provided by Taher Food Services, consisted of fruit, vegetables, mashed potatoes and meat.
Taylor McKinney, a student at Crescent Elementary School, thought the evening was going well. She said she liked showing her family the lunch, which is her favorite thing in school, followed by reading.
During family night, the parents got to see what teaching reading is like in kindergarten.
"Kindergarteners are reading and writing," Gerth said. "We have our sight words, our spelling lists, we have standards with performance tests where they are graded on their projects where they can show their reading and writing skills."
A representative from Usborne Children's Books was present to sell books to families and Tom Hurlburt, children's librarian at the Rhinelander District Library, was present to read to the children.
"He is always coming to Crescent School when we need some type of a special person to present or to help us out, so he is always willing to take on that challenge coming in," Gerth said.
The event was a hit with the parents, who enjoyed seeing what school is like for their children.
"I think it's a great way to get the family and kids together and see the other moms and dads and the other kids in (my son's) class," said Tia Spalding, parent.
