"Award-winning author Gary Ferguson believes that strong writing grows out of strong experience," the school said in a press release. "Over the past 40 years he's hiked and skied tens of thousands of miles through some of the largest tracts of wild country on earth: camping for months in the backcountry with a group of at-risk teens for 'Shouting at the Sky'; hiking from his front door into the heart of grizzly country, to the most remote location in the lower 48, for 'Hawks Rest: A Season in the Remote Heart of Yellowstone.'"

"What I'm looking for," he says, "what I'm celebrating, is the power of story. Tales of people finding their voices. Of life outside the box. Stories of the tracks nature leaves in the human heart."

Ferguson will recount highlights from more than three decades spent writing about the earth's wild places. In addition, using a mix of science and story, he will speak about the powerful lessons we can take from nature itself - using them to create a more powerful, more sustainable environmental movement in these challenging times.

Formerly an interpretive naturalist, Ferguson has written for publications from Vanity Fair to the Los Angeles Times. He's also the author of 23 books on ecology, psychology and history. "Hawks Rest" (National Geographic), became the first book in history to win non-fiction book of the year from both the Pacific Northwest and Mountains and Plains booksellers associations. His latest book, "The Carry Home," was described by the Los Angeles Times as "a big-hearted, soul-searching memoir," while Kirkus Review called it "A lovely, nourishing tonic for all who dip into it."

Ferguson was the 2002 Seigel Scholar at the School of Political Science at Washington University, St. Louis, and has been a distinguished visiting writer at both University of Montana and University of Idaho.

A member of the National Geographic Lectures Series, he has given lectures and workshops from coast to coast, while his and science-based essays can be heard on National Public Radio affiliates throughout the country. To find out more, visit him on the web at www.wildwords.net.

Ferguson's new book "The Carry Home" will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
