The beautiful Northwoods is putting on its annual show this October and so are the 29 studios featured in the 16th annual Northwoods Art Tour. As visitors and residents take a moment or a day to take leisurely drives to appreciate nature's gift to our senses, they are invited to explore original art by the gifted artists selected to be on the Northwoods Art Tour.

The private studios and artist-owned galleries are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Oct. 9, 10 and 11.

The free, self-guided tour ambles through Iron, Vilas, Oneida, Lincoln and Langlade counties. It will feature new work available for purchase in many media including photography, drawing, weaving, other fiber arts, painting in acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel and mixed media, furniture making in a variety of styles, woodworking, wood turning, pottery in decorative and functional styles, art glass, jewelry, sculpture and original printmaking techniques as well as reproduction prints.

Artists who make their home in the Northwoods often find its change of seasons and beauty as a resource that fills their creative well, whether drawing upon this inspiration in a representational way or letting it seep into their images and creative efforts as part of who they are.

Elcho watercolor painter Audrey Hood Hampton explained her connection.

"I strive to capture the solitude or the peace and tranquility of a place," she said. "It's that emotion that I try to recreate in my artwork. It's a feeling that heals my soul."

St Germain potter and printmaker Tammy Lauder shared the sentiment.

"The Northwoods brings me a sense of contentment. It takes away the chatter of the world and allows me to process my creative work," she said. "I love connecting the outdoors within my art either by integrating actual pieces of nature as part of my work, or creating an image representing nature and the outdoors."

"I am anchored in the Northwoods," added Mercer fiber artist Mary Burns. "There is a thread of that rootedness running through my weavings."

"Tour artists are excited to welcome visitors to their private spaces, sharing knowledge and inspirations as they demonstrate their techniques and working methods," tour organizers said in a press release. "Many artists consider the tour a highlight of their year. They look forward to visitor feedback, exchanging ideas, seeing old friends and making new ones through their art."

Galleries will also have art demonstrations.

Brochures with maps are available at area businesses and chambers and online at www.northwoodsarttour.com.
