NCES students make blankets, write letters for Rennes residents
By Kayla Thomason-
Earlier this month, the students made about 50 no-sew fleece blankets in several colors and patterns for the residents.
"It's a great community project for our kids to be involved in," said Tim Howell, principal.
Alex Bontz, a fifth-grade teacher at NCES, said the school's rural location poses a challenge when it comes to ensuring that students remain connected to the community.
"We just wanted to do something for the community and we're going to write personalized letters to them and then we're going to go visit them for a little bit, maybe bring some books to read to them, just to interact and show these kids that part of life," said Katy Koch, a fourth-grade teacher at the school.
Koch said she was hopeful the residents would tell the children stories about their lives and it would be a learning experience for the youngsters.
"We're going to connect this with Veterans Day so we're writing letters to the veterans," she said. "We found out what veterans are at Rennes and what branch of the military they are in and they will also deliver blankets to residents in need."
There are about 15 veterans at the facility and they were expected to receive multiple letters.
The students have been working with Paul Miller, substitute teacher, to craft their letters.
"It's nice to get away from the academics every once in a while and have some true-meaning projects," he said.
The project has been quite a hit with the students.
"I think it is very nice because we are helping back the community because they helped us when we needed them," said Conner Jensen.
Hunter Lawton said he was happy that the blankets will be donated, especially since it is getting colder out.
"I think it's nice because they have served us," he said.
His blanket had a blue top with swirls.
"I think it's paramount (for the children to be involved in a community project)," Howell said. "I think that to have the kids understand that the community is who supports us and our school and this is a way for us to give back to the community (is incredibly important)."
The students will bring the blankets and letters to Rennes before the year is out.
