LUHS donates proceeds from 'Pink Out' to Clinic's Northwoods Cancer Care Fund
This fund helps Northwoods-area residents who are facing cancer.
"Thanks to the students, staff and community who participated and supported the LUHS 'Pink Out' for breast cancer awareness," said Karen Swartz, Medical Oncology manager. "The generosity of those involved means the department can purchase items benefiting patients receiving care in Marshfield Clinic's Oncology departments."
Shellie Donovan, Marshfield Clinic Breast Care coordinator, said local fundraising events have a tremendously positive impact for clinic patients in the Northwoods.
"The Northwoods Cancer Care Fund helps provide wigs and salon services for patients to look and feel their best during and after chemotherapy," Donovan said. "It also provides post-operative mastectomy and lumpectomy bras, radiation relief cream during treatment, comfort and education materials for patients and their families, survivorship programs and non-treatment related items. These all serve as a constant reminder that no one is alone in their battle."
This is the sixth year LUHS has sponsored "Pink Out" at a home football game, but the first for proceeds staying local.
"This year we wanted to keep it more local, so we decided to donate to the Northwoods Cancer Care Fund to help people in our own community," said Kim Kargus-Myers, LUHS math teacher and student council advisor. "It is very rewarding to know exactly what our donation is being used for."
