Life-inspiring That Tree photo presentation free Dec. 8 at Nicolet College
It wasn't until 2012, while recuperating from a near-fatal car accident, that the tree finally caught his attention. He photographed it for the first time, setting off a year-long project that would change his life and go on to capture the attention of national media across the country.
Everyday for a year, he took a photo of the tree, in all weather, using only an iPhone. He posted the daily photos to a Facebook page dedicated to the project. The page quickly drew a large following, prompting Hirsch to assemble the photos and publish the highly-acclaimed book "That Tree."
Hirsch will give a presentation on the project and talk about the personal lessons he learned along the way at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the Nicolet College Theatre, the college said in a press release.
The event is free and open to the public.
In 2013, CBS Sunday Morning ran a feature on Hirsch and his project.
"That Tree," he said on the show, "taught me to slow down, take time to look around, and appreciate the almost (but not quite) hidden beauty that abounds in our world - sometimes even in your own backyard."
The evening at Nicolet will start with an opening reception at 6 p.m. for an exhibit of his photographs in the Nicolet College Art Gallery. This will be followed by a presentation in the Nicolet College Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
The exhibit will run through Wednesday, Dec. 30, and will be free and open to the public.
Both the Nicolet Theatre and Art Gallery are located in the Learning Resources Center on the Rhinelander campus, one mile south of the city just off of County Highway G.
