Over 100 community members bought bowls of soup to support the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing at the sixth annual Soup for Shelter held Saturday night at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School.

Eight restaurants, CT's Deli, Crimson Cafe, Coffee Beans Etc., Northern Coffee Haus, Friendship House, Dominic's Italian Beef, Riverview and Sportsman's Cafe in the Quality Inn, prepared soup for the event..

Fresh baked bread from Spang's Italian Restaurant in St. Germain was also available for people to eat with their meal.

"Excellent, absolutely fantastic," raved Beverly Wilmot, a second-year attendee. "It's really good. The soup is great, everything is great."

She sampled the cheesy broccoli, tomato basil and chicken wild rice soups. She also said the desserts were good and the coffee was "exceptional."

"I have tested a couple of (the soups) myself and they are superb, they really are," said Bill Miller, president of NATH.

Miller said he was happy with the turnout.

"I think it really shows and displays the community's support for the homeless shelter," he said.

Wilmot shared Miller's gratitude for the community's support.

"I like the way they get all the people together," Wilmot said. "I like that people can make a donation of what they can afford and it goes for a good cause."

She added that she wishes NATH would hold the event more than once a year.

Peter Rasmussen, future president of NATH, current board member and volunteer, has attended Soup for Shelter for a few years.

This year's event coincided with a celebration of his wife's birthday.

"I really am thankful that I live in this community, or adjacent to this community, because it is so helpful and the people and businesses within the community really reach out and support one another," he said.

He tried the tomato basil soup and really liked it.

Todd Joerns, a first-time attendee, also enjoyed the event.

"It's great, for a good cause, great soup," he said.

He said he liked the friendly environment, the good food and the charitable aspect.

Tammy Modic, executive director of NATH, was pleased with the entire event, from the turnout to the food, raffles and volunteers.

"The phenomenal thing is that we did get to start early and we're half full already and we had an amazing group of volunteers that got it together quicker than ever," she said. "It's like a well-oiled machine, someone said."

Modic said she the goal was to raise $2,500.

During the event people could try to win a variety of prizes from Christmas-themed gift baskets to boy or girl toy gift baskets.

NATH also had slips available for the 2016 "1,000 give $100" event.

The goal of that proejct is to get 1,000 people to donate $100 a year to NATH.
