The Rhinelander District Library has announced that the Marj and Dick Peters Memorial Lecture Series will continue on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. with a presentation by Mark Naniot, co-founder of Wild Instincts. Accompanied by a peregrine falcon and a red-tailed hawk, he will show how Wild Instincts is a critical component in the conservation of our Northwoods wildlife, the library said in a press release. Located in Rhinelander, Wild Instincts' mission of "providing quality, ethical wildlife rehabilitation while promoting wildlife stewardship through education and research" has been the guiding philosophy in their care and treatment of orphaned and injured wildlife since 2011. Naniot will show how they accomplish this, and will explain what the public can do to help wildlife in the winter, including what to feed and what not to feed backyard visitors. He will also discuss the animals that are in their care now and where they come from.

Founded by Mark Naniot and Sharon Larson, Wild Instincts has cared for over 100 species of animals, from mice to bears, hummingbirds to eagles, and everything in between.

"Mark has been mending orphaned and injured wildlife for almost 40 years," according to wildinstinctsrehab.com. "For the last 20 he has done it professionally. He has bachelor degrees in natural resources and biology. Mark served on the Wildlife Rehabilitation Advisory Committee to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to promote wildlife rehabilitation as a profession with guidelines and rules to protect the wildlife in rehabbers' care as well as safeguard the public from 2000-2012. Sharon Larson holds bachelor's degrees in both wildlife management and biology. She has been involved in domestic animal health care since 1979 and wildlife rehabilitation since the early 1980s. Naniot and Larson are both long-time members of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association and the Wisconsin Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. Naniot is also a Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator and instructor for IWRC. Both believe in providing quality wildlife care in which the animals' needs and well-being are considered above all else. Since 1996, the two have been responsible for the care and treatment of over 13,216 wild animals comprised from over 100 different species."

In May of 2015, Newsline 9 and Marshfield Clinics awarded Naniot the Jefferson Award, given to "ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward," according to WAOW.com.

This event is sponsored by the Marj and Dick Peters Memorial Lecture Series, established in 2006 to fund library programs on topics of conservation and sustainability. "Longtime Rhinelander residents Marj and Dick Peters enjoyed the outdoors and were keenly interested in preserving our natural resources for future generations," the release notes. "As a result of their generosity, this series has hosted 20 very interesting and diverse speakers and has developed a loyal following in the Northwoods. Call the library at (715) 365-1070 with any questions. A "wish list" of needed items can be viewed on Wild Instinct's website (wildinstinctsrehab.com) and items can be brought to the program.
