Amy Engel of Rhinelander has been named the 2015 Oneida County 4-H Volunteer of the Year.

Award recipients were announced during the annual Oneida County 4-H Recognition Banquet held Nov. 1 at the Newbold Town Hall in Rhinelander.

Engel, who has volunteered with Oneida County 4-H for 10 years, was awarded the honor due to her positive attitude and participation in a variety of projects.

"Amy readily takes on new activities and makes sure that every single youth involved feels a sense of belonging," said Lynn Feldman, University of Wisconsin-Extension Oneida County 4-H Youth Development Educator. "She is there to serve in whatever capacity or in whatever way we need her. If it's support or leadership, she always does what is needed."

Engel has served in leadership volunteer roles in the areas of poultry, rabbits, Legos, robotics, dog agility, Holiday Craft Workshop, Pawzitive Outdoor Games/Bark for Life and more. At the Oneida County Fair, she oversees Animal Alley and maintains the health and identification records for all animals at the fair, something that is required by the state of Wisconsin. She, along with her husband, John, and children, Anna, Adam and Alex, are involved in numerous 4-H activities.

Each November Oneida County 4-H recognizes many 4-H youth, adults and volunteers who have participated in 4-H events and activities. Currently Oneida County 4-H has 40 certified volunteers and 100 youth members. Anyone interested in joining 4-H or volunteering can sign up online at www.4honline.com or by calling (715) 365-2750. 4-H is free to join.

According to research done by the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, Medford, Ma., compared to their peers, 4-H'ers are nearly four times more likely to make contributions to their communities, two times more likely to be civically active, two times more likely to participate in Science,

Engineering and Computer Technology programs during out-of-school time, and two times more likely to make healthier choices.
