Wabeno Area Players preparing for 'Steel Magnolias'
"'Steel Magnolias' is the funniest show that will make you cry," the group said in a press release. "The play is alternately hilarious and touching as it moves from the excitement of Shelby Eatenton's wedding to sadness as friends mourn her loss."
There will be five performances of this well-loved play at the Essenhaus in Wabeno. The dates are Nov. 19, 20, 21, and 22. The show times are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19 and 20, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. All events will start with a Taste of Louisiana Dinner, served at the table, before the performance. The doors will open an hour and a half before each show - 1 p.m. for the matinees and 5:30 p.m. for the evening performances. Reservations are required and need to be made early because there is limited seating for the shows.
"All the ladies who are 'anybody' come to have their hair done at Truvy's Beauty Salon, while sharing the latest gossip and joys of friendship," according to a synopsis of the play. "The untimely death of Shelby, the daughter of M' Lynn, deeply affects the women. Their underlying strength and love, in good times and bad, help to weave a story of touching, funny, and sincere friendships. These women are true steel magnolias, southern belles who are flowery on the outside, but strong as steel on the inside."
The Wabeno Area Players' production showcases the talented actresses Kimberly Odekirk (Truvy), Linda Harter (M'Lynn), Kathy Millan (Clairee), Jennifer Thornton (Shelby), Carol Bartlein (Ouiser), and Breanne Kanak (Annelle). "Steel Magnolias" is under the direction of Josh Jameson. Wendy Richards is the assistant director.
"Steel Magnolias" was produced 25 years ago by the Wabeno Area Players. In this show, Linda Harter and Carol Bartlein are appearing as the same characters they played then. Kimberly Odekirk, who plays Truvy in this production, played Shelby 25 years ago. Kathy Millan and Breanne Kanak are making their acting debuts with The Players. Jennifer Thornton has performed on the Laona High School stage and in Third Thursday productions with the Wabeno Area Players.
According to director Josh Jameson, "Robert Harling was inspired to write his first play after his sister Susan died of complications from diabetes. Harling's work takes the audience through a rollercoaster ride of emotions with the characters, from laughter to tears, and everything in between. 'Steel Magnolias' is a great reminder that friendship and the support of our loved ones can see us through the challenges of life."
Ticket price is $25 per person for the Taste of Louisiana Dinner and the show.
