Rhinelander District Library offers new reading program for preschoolers
The library's Thousand Books Before Kindergarten Program is available to preschool children.
"It's kind of an early literacy push so the kids come in," said Denise Chojnacki, associate librarian at the Rhinelander District Library. "They sign up for the program, they get a free book and a folder that contains the reading log,"
One thousand books might sound overwhelming, but parents whose children love to chant "read it again, read it again" will be pleased to know that re-reading books counts toward that number, so long as the children are reading the book and a record is being kept.
"For every 100 books read they get an incentive - a prize - until they finish the program," Chojnacki said.
Prizes include stickers, erasers, buttons, pencils, reading tattoos or coupons for free ice cream.
The goal of this program is to get kids ready for kindergarten.
"It's kind of really catching on at libraries all over the state and United States and so we're one of the many that are hopping on board with that program," Chojnacki said.
To sign up for the program, visit the library, located at 106 N. Stevens St., to sign up. It is a quick process.
