Under threatening skies, Eagle River Speedway opened its 41st season of racing Friday.

The action was fast and furious from the beginning. Two of the five features saw bumper-to-bumper battles for the lead from the first lap to the end.

Rib Lake's Brad Seavers was in a tight battle with Chippewa Falls' Michael Truscott in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Before Truscott could get on the bumper of Seavers, he was in a three-way battle with his uncle, George Truscott, and his brother-in-law, Jesse Aho. Michael Truscott broke free from George Truscott and Aho on Lap 8 and took a couple laps to catch up to Seavers. Truscott and Seavers battled bumper-to-bumper for the next six laps. With four laps remaining, Truscott finally got around Seavers and went on to take the checkered flag.

The fans may have thought it was déjà vu in the Pure Stock feature. Tomahawk's C.J. Hedges sat on the tail of veteran Eagle River racer Don Scharf from the drop of the green flag until the 11th lap. Hedges tried every line he could to get around the experienced Scharf. Then, with four laps to go, Hedges went to the outside of Sharf on the hairpin third turn to take the lead. Hedges went on to win the feature, after taking the heat race earlier in the evening.

There was a scary incident in the Micro Sprint 600 feature. Woodruff's Fred Suchy hit the wall coming out of the third turn, traveling at over 80 MPH. The heavily damaged car ended up on its roof, but Suchy escaped serious injury.

Antigo's Jake Reif won the feature. Earlier in the evening he held off Suchy to win the heat race.

Tomahawk's Nate Langberg swept the WISSOTA Street Stock class, winning both the heat and the feature. Eagle River's Tommi Jo Springer won both the feature and the heat in the Junior Sprints.

Stock Car racing takes place at the challenging one third mile tri-oval this coming Friday night. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. with racing at 7:30.
