Dorothy Owens

Dorothy Angeline Ada Mary Tuchalski Phillips Kurlinski Beardsley Owens. The world lost one of its greatest lovers on March 20, 2015 as Dorothy's soul departed from her family and friends. "Dot" loved quilting, cooking, laughing, Scrabble, sewing, playing cards and raising a wonderful family. She was born in the small town of Edgar on July 16, 1923 to Ben and Josie Tuchalski. When she was three months old, the family moved to Rhinelander where Dot spent most of her life. She attended St. Mary's Elementary School and Rhinelander junior high school, graduating from the senior high school. At 19, she married 1st Lt. Joseph Phillips and they had a daughter, Mary Suzanne (Suzy), just before Joe was sent to the war in Europe. He was killed in a glider crash on Sept. 19, 1944, their second wedding anniversary. Dot worked in the Register of Deeds office where she met her second husband, Edmund Kurlinski. Together they had eight children: Kathryn (Kate), Mark, George, Thomas (Tom), Laura, John, Kim and Amelia. Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom and later held jobs at the Claridge Motor Inn and the Schiek Clinic. In 1973, after 28 years of marriage, Ed died of lung cancer. But love found her again and Dot married O. Bennett (Ben) Beardsley in 1975. They spent time traveling to all 50 states and helped to build orphanages in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. Ben had three sons who she grew to love as her own. Sadly, Ben died suddenly in 1995. It was in 1998, at her 57th class reunion, that she met her former classmate and soon-to-be fourth husband, J. Joseph (Joe) Owens. Joe, a widower, had six children so the love multiplied again. Dot was loved by all who knew her and was lucky to have been blessed with so many children, stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands (Joseph, Edmund, Bennett) four brothers (Isadore, Mark, Joseph, Benjamin), three sisters (Mary, Terese, Laura) and daughter Amelia. She is survived by her husband, Joe Owens, her children and their spouses: Suzy/Harry Anderle, Kate/Denny Herrmann, Mark Kurlinski, George Kurlinski, Tom/Lea Kurlinski, Laura/Curt Peck, John/Barb Kurlinski, and Kim/Tom Davis; and by her much loved stepchildren and spouses: Duane/Eloise Beardsley, Allen/Francy Beardsley, David/Donnalene Beardsley, Patricia Owens, Dennis Owens/Lili Shidlovski, Peggy Owens, Jim/Mary Owens, Kathleen Dantes and Ann Owens. And let's not forget the 26 grandchildren and the 24.5 great-grandchildren. This does not even begin to mention nieces, nephews, their families and her friends, including her dear friend Virginia Catlin. Dorothy was always amazed and grateful that God gave us the capacity to sincerely love so many people all at the same time. She was grateful to the end for God, our Savior, and all the blessings he bestows! A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on March 31, 2015 at the Rhinelander Seventh Day Adventist Church. You may leave your private condolences for Dorothy's family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is handling the arrangements for her family.
