As part of our continuing effort to highlight interesting people in the community, the River News is offering readers a periodic feature entitled Someone You Should Know. Our reporters are compiling short profiles of individuals who are making valuable contributions to the community through their employment or volunteer work. Today we feature Jim Nuttall, director of theatre at Nicolet Area Technical College.

RN: Please explain your job.

Nuttall: I do three things at the college: I teach classes in film and theatre and I direct the plays that we put on here - The Nicolet Players plays - that's our community theatre, and then the third thing is I manage the whole performing arts series that we have here where we are touring in concerts and children's shows and lectures. It's a whole mixed bag of things. Between those three things that's what I do here at the college.

RN: How long have you held this job?

Nuttall: I first got here in 1985. I worked here for a while and then I left and went and did some professional theatre. I came back and then I did that again and came back, but I've been here regularly for probably at least 20 years.

RN: What is your favorite part of the job?

Nuttall: I like directing the plays. I love the people that come out to participate in the shows and that's really where my heart is.

RN: What is the biggest misconception about the job?

Nuttall: I think people have a pretty good idea of what I do. The only thing is people see me when I'm wearing one hat and I kind of wear three hats here so sometimes they don't know that I do other things, that I teach and I do this and I do that, but I don't think that's even much of a misconception.

Probably the biggest thing is that people don't realize how much work the actors put into a rehearsal. They don't really see it, they just see the finished product. I've had people actually say "I thought you just cast them and then you go through it a couple times and then you're there," but that's probably the biggest thing: how much time the actors put into putting the production together. It could be six weeks of evenings and for this one (the spring production of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood") it's going to be eight weeks of night, night, night, night, night doing the whole thing. So that's probably the thing that I'd mention is "boy, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that's happening."

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Nuttall: When I get spare time I like to travel. I like to head out of town and usually go to bigger cities and I like to go to other theaters and see what they're putting on.
