Teams are limited to five runs an inning and the Snowhawks reached the limit in each of the first two frames - and three times overall - Monday as they kicked off the 55th summer of snowshoe baseball in Lake Tomahawk with a 24-8 victory over The Brick at Snowshoe Park.
Snowhawks defense shut out The Brick to open the game and then turned around to score five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Derek Young, Todd Niemuth, Cole Punches, Alex Bailey and Billy Kuckkahn all came around to score, before the inning was called on the five-run rule.
The Brick opened the second inning with a fight, knowing they had their work cut out for them. Cody Remick and Scott King singled and came around to score on a double by Keaton Hill and a single from Jessie Builder to put two runs on the board.
The Snowhawks again came back in the bottom of the second and had the inning called via the five-run rule. Craig Holmquist and Jack Dunbar singled to lead off the inning for the Snowhawks. The next batter, Jeff Smith, sent a pitch flying to the outfield for a double to drive in both runs. Smith, Young and Punches all came across home plate before the inning was called with two outs for the second time in the game, expanding the Snowhawks lead to 10-2.
T.J. Lelonek started off the third inning for The Brick sending a shot to the right field wall, making it safely into third for a triple. He scored when the next batter, Wes Harmon, hit a single past Young at shortstop. Harmon and Kaleb Remick came around to score on a two-run single from Cody Remick before the side was retired, making it a 10-5 ball game.
The Brick was able to limit the damage in the bottom of the third, only giving up two runs. The first of the two runs was scored by Holmquist who led off the inning with a triple. Donnie Moore also came around to score making it a 12-5 ball game.
Builder scored a lone run for the Brick in the fourth. They then struggled to limit to damage from the Snowhawks, who scored 12 runs to The Brick's one in the next couple innings.
Ian Meyers scored for the Brick on a triple by Cody Remick in the seventh but the side was retired leaving the final score Snowhawks 24, The Brick 8.
Smith, the Snowhawks playing manager, was modest in his assessment of the game. He said he thought his team played well, although there is one thing he would like to work on.
"I think we did pretty good," Smith said. "I think we need to practice up on some throwing but other than that I think we did OK."
The Snowhawks have a couple of newcomers on the team this year. Gunnar and Jack Dunbar are both new to the Snowhawks, although they are not new to the sport of snowshoe baseball. Smith said he was happy with the newcomers.
"The new players, they did great. I thought they fit in (with the team) very well," he said.
The Snowhawks will face one of its biggest rivals next week when they host Smiley's. Every year Smiley's is known to give the Snowhawks a run for their money and Smith reinforced that notion.
"We play Smiley's next week," he said. "That will be a good game, it always is."
The Snowhawks and Smiley's will square off 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Snowshoe Park in Lake Tomahawk.
