Vernon, Blackberg surprise winners at Eagle River Speedway
One racer won his first career feature, another came from the back of the pack to win on the final turn of the race, and a driver who had a long winning streak didn't even make it to the starting line.
Ashland's Tyler Vernon made his second trip to the challenging tri-oval worthwhile, earning his first career feature victory in Friday's WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. To get the memorable winVernon had to hold off three-time defending track champion Jesse Aho.
The most exciting race of the night took place in the Pure Stock feature. Phelps' Ron Drake led from the start to the final turn of the final lap, when he lost control of his car coming out of the hairpin Turn 3. Dennis Lacrosse and Don Scharf - running second and third - had to make evasive moves to miss Drake's spinning race car. That opened the door for Eagle River's David Blackberg, who snuck around on the outside and dashed to the finish line.
Blackberg had to go to the back of the pack midway through the race due to an altercation. As he worked his way through the field, he came upon the battle between Drake, Lacrosse, and Scharf.
Going into the night, Tomahawk's C.J. Hedges had been undefeated in the Pure Stocks at Eagle River. Hedges swept through the field to win the heat, however he was unable to get his car to the starting line for the feature.
While Vernon and Blackberg were the surprise winners of the night. The defending WISSOTA Street Stock champion, Jordan Kurtti of Bruce Crossing, Mich., held serve by winning his feature. Eagle River's Ryan Glembin thrilled the fans in the Street Stock heat race by making many moves to work his way through traffic. When Nate Langberg went wide in Turn 3, Glembin squeezed by on the inside to get the lead and the win.
Another exciting heat race took place in the Micro Sprint 600s. Jake Reif made a sling shot move at over 80 mph to get by his father Jerry. Jake not only won the heat but held off hard-charging 14-year-old Denver Larson to win the feature.
Tommi Jo Springer swept both the feature an the heat in the Junior Sprints.
Stock car racing returns to Eagle River Speedway this coming Friday night. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m., with racing at 7:30.
