"Rebecca (Morien) is awesome at landscaping so I asked if she would help do this, and she has been working on it all day long with her children," said Pelican Elementary School Principal Martha Knudtson,
Morien and her children - Carleene, Kyle and Ryan - were busy digging up tall grass from around the sign and hauling it away, mounding up the dirt, laying a weed barrier and plastic down since 9:30 a.m. Knudtson joined the family a little while later.
Wood chips formed a solid circle around the sign, boulders came to rest around the posts and rocks formed a border. Plants were strategically placed between the bolders.
"I wanted to keep it simple, like easy maintenance, taking plants that are hardy in this type of area and climate and plant it, make it kind of like a rock garden too, so low maintenance," Morien said.
"I'm excited to have it looking nice for the start of summer school," Knudtson added. "And some of the neighbors have stopped and they said it's looking great and that's always nice to hear."
The landscaping not only looks beautiful, it serves as protection for the sign, which was erected approximately two years.
"We get a lot of snow and the snowplow hits (the sign) so I think we're going to have a good barrier," Knudtson said. "And (Rebecca is) thinking ahead so that when the snowplow, the lawnmower, all those things come through that it should endure."
The project cost next to nothing. They recycled the old rocks from the school's roof, the big rocks came from CAVOC (the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom), the hardy and deer-resistant plants were split from Morien's plants at her house, the wood chips were from the school playground and the weed barrier came from the shed.
