It's not everyday that someone from Italy spends time in the Oneida County Jail, but that's what happened after an Italian man living in Atlanta was allegedly showing off in the parking lot of Hodag Lanes early June 10 in a rental car and lost control of the vehicle, striking the building and injuring a passenger in the car in the process.
Roberto Carnieletto was charged June 11 with reckless driving causing bodily harm, a misdemeanor.
According to a police report attached to the criminal complaint, it is alleged that Carnieletto was revving his motor, doing fast turns and racing through the parking lot of the bowling alley in his rental Chevrolet Camaro when he allegedly lost control and hit the east side of the building. A female passenger in the vehicle struck her forehead against the windshield, causing a "visible bump on the left side of her forehead," according to the report.
The bartender at the bowling alley turned over Carnieletto's American Express credit card which he had left in the bar. He told the investigating officer from the Rhinelander Police Department that Carnieletto appeared to be intoxicated when he arrived and was served two shots and two beers before he and the passenger went out into the parking lot.
The Camaro was later located at the Claridge Days Inn on Stevens Street. Officers unsuccessfully tried to make contact with Carnieletto by phone and knocking on the door of his hotel room. Accord-ing to the police report, there was visible damage to the car and there was green paint on the damaged area consistent with that of Hodag Lanes' exterior. Police had the car impounded and the next shift was told to watch for Carnieletto.
Later that day, Carnieletto was picked up and booked into the Oneida County Jail.
When questioned by officers, Carnieletto admitted to driving the vehicle, but did not think he was intoxicated. When asked why he didn't stay at the scene after the accident, he replied that he was not aware that he had to notify police of the accident because he had insurance on the rental car.
Judge Michael Bloom set bond at $1,826.60 which Carnieletto posted.
He was given a return date of Aug. 3 on the charge. Companion traffic tickets for unreasonable and imprudent speed, failure of operator to notify police of an accident and hit and run of property adjacent to the highway will track along with the misdemeanor charge.
