Two Rhinelander teams faced off in the first game of a Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League doubleheader Thursday night at Hodag Park in Rhinelander.
Rhinelander 3 came out victorious with a 12-0 win over Rhinelander 1. Pitching was the foundation that paved the way for the win. Alec Modrow went six innings for Rhinelander 3, striking out nine batters. Danny Zuiker came in to pitch the last inning and struck out one.
Rhinelander 3 scored in every inning with the most damage coming in a five-run seventh inning. Jacob DeMeyer scored three runs on three hits, one of which was a triple. Zuiker scored two runs on one hit, stole a base and brought in one run. Modrow brought in two runs, stole a base and had three hits to add to his day on the mound. Cole Spaulding, Wild, Nate Cogar, Jake Wilmot, Jacob Dreifuerst, Max Spaulding, Teagan Guckenberg, Logan Oestreich all scored during the game.
Max Spaulding brought in two runs and Cogar, Wild, and Cole Spaulding all brought in runs.
Josh Randolph started for Rhinelander 2. He pitched four innings and struck out three batters. Jon Huempfner came in for the final three innings for relief. Eric Grulke, Huempfner and Alec Kurtz had hits in the game for Rhinelander 2. Both Abe Laggis and Randolph stole bases while Laggis and Tim Remitz drew walks.

Merrill Gray 14, Rhinelander-1 3
Rhinelander 1 faced off against a hard-hitting Merrill team in the second game of the night Thursday at Hodag Park and fell 14-3.
Merrill started with a bang scoring three runs in the first inning. Rhinelander answered back with one run in the bottom of the first. Merrill brought hot bats back to the plate in the second, scoring four runs and three runs in the third but Rhinelander's pitching found its stride in third, shutting out Merrill in back-to-back innings. Rhinelander held on long enough to force six innings and made a run for in it the bottom of the sixth inning. Rhinelander showed discipline at the plate in the sixth, drawing five walks to load the bases twice. Merrill's pitcher found his command just in time to put Rhinelander away after six.
Liam Rappley was Rhinelander's starting pitcher and went 2 1/3 innings striking out two batters.
Conner Cooper took the hill the third inning and pitched the remainder of the game, striking out three batters.
Rappley scored one run on two hits, one of which was a double and brought in one run. Cooper had two hits on the day, walked and drove in a run. Seth Hargraves hit a standing triple in the second inning. Brandon Cox walked twice. Travis Young, Kaden Umland, Jason Husbey, Owen White and Bradley Comer all drew walks in the ball game.
