The race is on: Worms wriggle to glory at Rhinelander District Library
By Kayla Thomason-
"We always have 60 two-people teams," said Tom Hurlburt, children's librarian at the Rhinelander District Library. "We're a couple short this year with the threat of rain that never happened."
The owners of the worms cheered their little racers on as they wriggled from yellow lids placed in the center of the table to the finish line.
"Racing went fast," Hurlburt said. "When it's cloudy they run a little faster (as opposed to last year when it was hot, causing the worms to be sluggish)."
Reese Baron of Illinois and Vance Eagleson of Rhinelander won this year's worm race.
Their little champion "Fred" was released after his victory.
"It was really fun," said Eagleson, a sixth-year competitor. "I didn't think I was going to win first place this year but we did."
He said he hopes to defend his title next year.
This was Reese Baron's first time competing in the worm race, a rite of passage for many local children.
"It was pretty fun for the first time," he said. "I thought I wasn't going to like it but when I came I really liked it."
Second-place winners were Katelyn and Natalie Schrock with their worm "Anonymous."
Third place went to Charlie Zaron and Cindy Edlund with "Wormy."
