Rhinelander Fire Department Local #1028 surpassed its record for money raised during this year's Fill the Boot campaign - the department's annual fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association - which was held July 9-11.

The department raised $14,245.13, a $2,031.13 increase from last year. This year's funds boost the overall total for the past seven years to $81,947.20.

The firefighters said they saw many familiar faces come through the line as well as visitors who were vacationing or attending Hodag Country Fest.

"It appears that people are very friendly and smiling all the time when they are putting the money in the boots," said Lt. Jim Plautz. "We actually get many people thanking us for what we are doing for MDA and along with some positive encouragement with comments like 'keep up the good work.'"

That encouragement is one of the many reasons the Rhinelander Fire Department participates in the yearly fundraiser. The other reason is to support those suffering from muscular diseases.

The firefighters got to go to the MDA Summer Camp and meet children with muscular dystrophy.

"MDA is such an awesome program," Plautz said.

The Rhinelander Fire Department and the MDA would like to thank Bucketheads, Hodag Lanes, Kids Korner Pizza, Taco Johns and the BP gas station on Dwight and Stevens streets for donating food and water, and Concrete Products for offering the firefighters a place to park while they participated in Fill the Boot.
