Babe Ruth: Rhinelander 3 falls to Merrill Gray in championship game
Merrill got the early jump, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning to open the game, but Rhinelander answered back in the bottom half of the inning plating five runs to pull within a run.
Rhinelander added three more runs to the board in the bottom half of the second inning to take the lead 8-6, but Merrill came back in the third with four runs of its own. Both teams scored four runs in the fifth inning to make the score 14-12 in favor of Merrill. That score would stand.
Logan Wild started the day on the mound and pitched five innings. Jacob DeMeyer came in to pitch the final two innings, striking out four batters.
DeMeyer scored two runs on one hit and was hit by a pitch.
Danny Zuiker scored two runs on two hits and hit a sacrifice fly.
Alec Modrow scored one run on two hits, driving in one, He walked twice, stole a base, and threw out two base runners from behind the plate.
Cole Spaulding score two runs on two hits, driving in three runs, and stole a base.
Wild scored two runs on one hit, walked twice and stole two bases.
Jacob Dreifuerst scored one run on two hits with two RBIs.
Jake Wilmot scored one run on two hits and drove in a run.
Nate Cogar laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Teagan Guckenberg walked and Logan Oestreich scored a run.
Rhinelander-3 10, Tomahawk Cardinals 9
Monday night baseball at Stafford Field in Rhinelander played host to the semifinal round of the Senior League tournament. In the first of two games Rhinelander 3 faced off against the Tomahawk Cardinals to decide who would play the winner of the night's second game between Merrill Gray and Eagle River. Rhinelander 3 won the contest in extra innings 10-9.
Rhinelander had the upper hand through the majority of the game. Rhinelander scored two runs on a two RBI single by Logan Wild in the top of the first inning. Tomahawk got back one of the two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rhinelander put up three more runs on the scoreboard during the top of the third inning and again Tomahawk answered back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. Rhinelander brought home two to Tomahawk's one in the fourth inning.
Rhinelander plated one more run in the top of the fifth inning, but struggled defensively in the bottom half of the inning. Tomahawk's first three batters reached on defensive errors with two of the runners coming around to score. Modrow then struck out the next three batters to get Rhinelander out of the inning without giving up the lead. Rhinelander held a 8-6 lead after five innings of play. The bottom half of the seventh inning was the next time anyone would cross home plate. Tomahawk scored two runs to tie the ball game with the tying run crossing home plate on an extremely close call at home plate that had the fans heckling the home plate umpire. With the game tied 8-8 the teams headed into extra innings. Rhinelander opened the eighth inning with three walks (Guckenberg, Wilmot and DeMeyer) to load the bases. Zuiker then drew a fourth walk to walk in a run. A sacrifice fly from Modrow drove in a second run before the side was retired. Rhinelander held Tomahawk to one run in the bottom of the inning, walking away with a 10-9 victory to send them to the championship game on Tuesday.
Modrow started the day on the mound for Rhinelander, pitching six innings and striking out seven batters. Wild pitched the final two innings of the ball game.
DeMeyer scored one run on one hit, walked twice and stole a base.
Zuiker scored two runs on one hit and walked three times. Modrow scored one run on three hits, and drove in four runs.
Cole Spaulding scored one run on one hit, walked and stole a base.
Wild had two hits to drive in four runs and stole a base.
Guckenberg scored one run on two hits and drew two walks.
Wilmot scored two runs on one hit and walked twice.
Oestreich scored one run on two hits. Cogar had a hit and a walk and Dreifuerst had a hit.
