The game was a nail-biter that came down to extra innings. Rhinelander 3 squeaked out the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning, 7-6.
It was all Rhinelander 3 through the first four innings of play, as the grayshirts held a 4-1 lead over Rhinelander 2. But a five-run fifth for Rhinelander 2 gave the greenshirts a two-run lead. Rhinelander 3 got one run back in the sixth inning when Cole Spaulding drew a walk, stole two bases and scored on a single by Jacob Dreifurst. Rhinelander 3 then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Teagan Guckenberg drew a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Connor Lund.
The game headed to extras. Rhinelander 3 held off Rhinelander 2 in the top of the inning and capitalized on a wild pitch when Alec Modrow scored from third base for the walk-off win.
Jacob DeMeyer started the day on the mound for Rhinelander 3, pitched seven innings striking out 10 batters. Modrow came in for the eighth inning and struck out one, facing four batters.
Offensively, DeMeyer scored one run on one hit, stole a base and drew a walk. Danny Zuiker scored twice and drew a walk. Modrow scored two runs on one hit, stole a base, walked and hit a sacrifice bunt. Cole Spaulding scored one run on a walk, laid down two sacrifice bunts and stole two bases. Logan Wild scored one run, walked twice and stole a base. Dreifurst had one hit to drive in a run. Guckenberg scored one run, walked twice and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Logan Oestreich had one hit and one walk. Lund had on hit and drove in one on a sacrifice fly.
Max Spaulding walked twice before leaving the game in the seventh inning with a shoulder injury after a collision with the catcher sliding into home plate.
Jake Wilmot had a hit in the game for Rhinelander 3.
Rhinelander 2 brought four pitchers to the mound during the game. Brad Quade, Cody Sedlacek, Jon Humpfner and Josh Randolph collectively struck out four batters.
Randolph scored two runs on two hits, drove in one, walked and stole a base. Eric Grulke scored once on three hits and drove in one. Kamerin Resch scored once and walked.
Brad Orth scored once and walked. Abe Laggis had one hit and walked. Brad Quade scored once and walked twice. Humpfner had three hits, driving in two.
Tim Remitz and Cody Sedlacek both drew walks.
Rhinelander 3 moves onto the semifinals to face the Tomahawk Cardinals at 5 p.m. Monday at Stafford Field. The winner of that match will head to the championship game on July 21 in Rhinelander.
Note: Rhinelander 1 was eliminated from the tournament Wednesday night, falling 9-3 to Merrill Gray in Merrill. Details from that game were not immediately available.
