Friday was a night that the racers at the legendary 41-year-old tri-oval at Eagle River Speedway will always remember. For some the memories are special, for others it's a night they would like to forget.
The evening picked up with a couple of races that actually should have been held the week before. Rain postponed the previous week's feature in the Annual Auto Value WISSOTA Midwest Modified Special, and the Pure Stock feature.
The Midwest Modified special was a 25-lap feature. Winning the race was a driver who has made trips victory lanes all over the Midwest - Chippewa Falls' Michael Truscott.
Truscott went into the night as the WISSOTA Midwest Modified national point leader. That win will help him maintain that lead. While that race will be one Truscott will likely fondly remember, the Midwest Mod feature scheduled for this past Friday night he would probably like to forget.
In the Northern Lakes Landscaping Feature, Truscott made a move to challenge his brother-in-law, Jesse Aho. It was in the hairpin third turn that Truscott's No. 22T got loose. With his car going into a slide, three cars right behind him braked to avoid hitting Truscott, creating a chain reaction and a caution that sent Truscott to the rear of the field.
Truscott worked his way through the crowd, but not fast enough to defeat Aho.
Jerry Grasse of Phelps was unable to race after it was determined his car did not meet WISSOTA rules. He was disqualified for the Auto Value Midwest Mod Special and the Northern Lakes Landscaping races.
It was a night that the large crowd and the Springer family of Eagle River will remember. Fans will remember the Micro Sprint 600 feature as one of the most exciting races of the night.
Ty Springer, 12, passed defending track champion, Jered Cech, for the lead on Lap 4 of the Micro Sprint feature. Springer passed Cech on the inside of the sweeping second turn, like Cech was standing still. Then Ty hit speeds of over 90 mph as he continued to build a lead of over a half lap on his nearest competitor, Cech.
That is until Lap 12 of the 15-lap race, when Springer spun out on the hard-to-handle button-hook third turn. This brought out the caution and moved Springer to the back.
Springer charged through the field on the ensuing restart, but ran out of laps as Cech took the win.
It must have been an upside down horseshoe in the Springer trailer. In the Junior Sprint heat, Tommi Jo Springer also had a big lead as the race was winding down but spun out in the same place as her brother. Unlike her brother, Tommi Jo's car received damage and she was forced to pull out of the feature.
Lake Tomahawk's Hunter Tingley won the Junior Sprint feature, holding off Conover's Dayton Rein.
Sponsor Northern Lakes Landscaping used the night to honor Northern Access Special Olympians. After the race Rein gave his trophy to Nikki Deditz, the daughter of Northern Access Agency co-managers, Lou and Mary Deditz. Nikki is a Special Olympic athlete.
The memories of the night may not be fond for the Springers, but it will be a night that will bring about a smile to two Eagle River racers.
Eagle River's Ryan Glembin held off Tomahawk's Nate Langberg to win the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Glembin broke out of the traffic by racing so low on the inside of the hairpin turn that he came within inches of hitting the tires that line the apron of the track.
Glembin was asked if he was nervous of hitting the tire.
Glembin simply chuckled and said, "No, me worry?"
It was a big night for another Eagle River racer - Jake Ison. In the Pure Stock feature that was postponed from the week before, Ison held off the top racers in the class. He not only went on to win the postponed race. He spanked the field to the point fans wondered if the other drivers could even sit for the second Pure Stock feature. Ison was so thrilled to win that first feature at Eagle River Speedway that while standing on the roof of his No. 001 car, he made sure those in the Upper Peninsula could hear his scream of joy.
Ison's joy was short-lived. He found out quickly that defending Eagle River Speedway Pure Stock Point Champion C.J. Hedges Jr., defending class runner-up Don Scharf and this summer's Pure Stock star David Blackberg, were preparing to bring him back to Earth. Hedges, Blackberg and Scharf engaged in bumper-to-bumper battle with Ron Drake Jr. of Phelps during the feature
Blackberg patiently weaved his way through traffic to get the lead. With Blackberg in the lead, everyone else got stuck in the traffic of an 11-car field. Blackberg ran away from the field for the win.
This Friday night Eagle River Speedway will have one-on-one spectator racing, in addition to the regular five class racing action. For more information, visit the Eagle River Speedway Facebook page, www.eagleriverspeedway.com or call (715) 479-5208. Hot laps will begin at 7 p.m.
