Rhinelander District Library to host author Joseph Heywood
Heywood has authored 18 books, firmly grounding his work in his many years of life and adventures in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. His latest collection of short stories, "Harder Ground," was published earlier this year, and his 10th Woods Cop novel will be published in March 2016, with the working title of "Buckular Dystrophy."
His mystery series is based on the lives of Upper Peninsula conservation officers, with whom he spends about one month a year on patrol, in all kinds of weather. He has worked in all 15 U.P. counties as well as in another 20 "BTB" (below the bridge) Michigan counties.
"The Upper Peninsula is not just a setting and base for me but serves as a character in many of my novels," Heywood said. "When I write, I try to take readers to places and events in the U.P. they might not have occasion to visit or experience on their own. For me, the U.P. is a natural jewel and I am always surprised by how little people from BTB know about it."
In addition to writing and tromping through the woods and snow with conservation officers, Heywood is also an accomplished photographer and painter. He takes photographs while walking, hiking, and fishing, using some of those pictures for his paintings.
