Renovations underway at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School
The $400,000 project is being funded through capital campaigns organized over the years, with the goal of raising $2 to $3 million, Heise said.
Original plans included constructing brand new buildings. Future work is planned for the church.
"It's so exciting to have these buildings, that were built in the 1950s, be renovated," said Heise. "It says that we care enough about our students, their families, and our parishioners to do this."
Renovations are being performed specifically on the gym floor and in two classrooms to remove asbestos, as well as the library.
"Asbestos abatement is being done," Heise confirmed.
The existing library will be reverting to the cafeteria it was when the buildings were originally built, Heise added, and two classrooms will be transformed into a new library and technology center.
In the north building, the school office, principal's office, and student health center will be moved near the parking lot area for security and accessibility reasons, Heise said.
The front entrance of the south building will be renovated to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Heise said.
Both the north and south buildings will be rewired and made ready for updated technology, said Heise.
The music room is being moved and carpeted, and the kindergarten room will be carpeted as well, Heise said.
Heating and ventilation issues will also be addressed.
Once renovations of the school are complete, renovations will begin on the church, said Heise.
Miron Construction is heading up renovation efforts, Heise said, with a lot of local subcontractors and consultants adding their efforts to the construction.
The success of the renovation efforts depend largely on volunteer efforts, Heise said, as the renovation committee in place for years has been entirely comprised of volunteers.
Volunteers and parents have also assisted with painting, hanging items on walls, and moving furniture.
The target date for completion of construction is Aug. 1 for the interior of the buildings, and Aug. 15 for the exterior of the buildings, Heise said.
Prior to school opening on Sept. 1, Nativity will hold an open house and orientation. Students, their families and parishioners will be able to see the results of their hard work, Heise said.
The capital campaign is ongoing, Heise said, to assist with upcoming costs of plans for the church.
Planning meetings for the church renovation will begin in January 2016, Heise said, with architects entering the picture at that point.
A gathering space is a planned addition to the church, along with a second floor parish office. Air conditioning is also on the wish list, Heise said.
