A crowd gathered in the Coldwell Banker Mulleady Inc. parking lot Thursday for the ninth annual Brat Fry to support local veterans.
As people purchased their lunch the smell of juicy brats sizzling on the grill was carried on the breeze. Chips, soda, and a cookie completed the meal.
"It's a good opportunity for people to just come together and just enjoy some food," said Stephanie Forst, a first-time attendee.
She said she was pleased that all the proceeds from the brat sale will benefit veterans.
"I think it's a good idea, there's tons of soldiers that could use money," she said.
She wasn't the only one feeling patriotic.
"I think it's a really good idea, like especially with it near a holiday like the Fourth of July," said Erin Tenderholt. "One of the things I like about living in a small town is that there are a lot of things like brat frys that bring people together."
Tenderholt has been to the brat fry since the beginning.
"Part of the reason that we have Fourth of July is to celebrate our nation and the freedom we have," she said. "Part of that is how our freedom is protected and I think it's only fitting that the proceeds go to the people who have protected our freedom."
"The drive was to do something for the Fourth of July and so we have traditionally had this on the second or third of July and in honoring our veterans and whatever from the past few wars and it's been a wonderful experience," said Jim Mulleady, owner of Coldwell Banker Mulleady Inc. Realtors.
When Larry Corder, a first-time attendee, heard about the brat fry he thought it was a fantastic idea.
"I was amazed," he said.
On average $4,000 is raised from the sale of 400 brats and what people put in the donation box. All of the proceeds are donated to the Veterans of Foreign War.
"People in Rhinelander (are) wonderful here to stop by," said Mulleady.
Coldwell Banker Mulleady Inc. Realtors and Rhinelander GM & Toyota co-sponsored the event.
