Thursday's Babe Ruth doubleheader at Hodag Park brought plenty of excitement. The night's first matchup was a showdown that might have been the deciding factor in who plays Lakeland in the regular season championship.
Rhinelander 3 and Eagle River entered play Thursday tied in the Marquardt division at 8-2. Rhinelander 3 came out on top 7-5 with one game remaining for each team.
Rhinelander 3 played from behind through the first 3 1/2 innings of play. Rhinelander 3 went to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning trailing 3-1. That's when the bats came alive as the Hodags plated four runs on four hits to bring the score to 5-3 in their favor. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning and held Eagle River to one run in each of the last two innings, finishing out the game with the win.
Rhinelander 3 had Jacob DeMeyer throwing pitches from the mound. DeMeyer went six innings in the victory, striking out eight batters.
Logan Wild came in to record the save in the seventh inning striking out one.
DeMeyer scored two runs on two hits and stole three bases. Alec Modrow scored once on one hit, walked and drove in one. Cole Spaulding scored one run on two hits. Wild scored one run on one hit and drove in one.
Nate Cogar hit a double to drive in a run. Jacob Dreifuerst scored once on one hit. Teagan Guckenberg scored one run on two hits. Connor Lund had one hit to drive in a run and Logan Oestreich drove in one.
One of the two teams will face Lakeland Thursday in the regular season championship Eagle River will at Tomahawk Cardinals Tuesday night, while Rhinelander 3 finished a game with Merrill Gray that was suspended with the score tied at 10 after eight innings due to darkness. Both games were scheduled for Monday, but pushed back due to rain. Should Rhinelander 3 win and/or Eagle River lose, Rhinelander 3 will face Lakeland in the championship game. Should Rhinelander 3 lose and Eagle River win, Eagle River will go on to play Lakeland.
Rhinelander-1 8, Laser Pros 7
Rhinelander 1 and Laser Pros faced off for the second game of the doubleheader on Thursday. Rhinelander 1 finished with a dramatic walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning, taking the game 8-7. Laser Pros got the early jump, scoring three runs in the first inning and the two teams traded runs through the next four innings. Heading into the sixth inning Laser Pros had a 7-5 edge over Rhinelander 3. Connor Cooper pitched the final two innings scoreless for Rhinelander 1, recording back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh inning.
Rhinelander 1 went to bat in the bottom of the seventh behind by two runs. Liam Rappley led off with a single to left field and then stole second. Cooper drove in Rappley to narrow the margin. Laser Pros pitcher Matthew Reinthaler retired the next two batters before Matthias Schneider doubled to drive in the tying run. Travis Young was the next batter. With Schneider at second a single from Young was enough to drive in Schneider for the walk-off win.
Martin Hoger started the day on the mound for Rhinelander 1. He pitched two innings and struck out two batters. Liam Rappley pitched two innings, striking out one, before Cooper came in to finish the final three innings, striking out three.
Rappley scored three runs on two hits, walked and stole three bases. Cooper scored three runs on one hit, walked twice, stole a base and drove in one. Hogar scored one run on three hits, stole two bases and drove in two. Schneider scored one run on three hits, stole two bases and drove in one. Young had a walk in addition to his game-winning hit.
Brad Comer walked twice, Brandon Cox doubled and Asher Johnson drew a walk.
Laser Pros sent Bryce Schickert to the mound. He pitched four innings striking out eight batters. Reinthaler came in during the fifth inning in relief and pitched the remaining 2 2/3 innings, striking out three.
Scott Fox scored twice on three hits and stole two bases for Laser Pros. Easton Senoraske scored once on one hit and stole two bases. Tait Spencer scored once and hit a triple. Reinthaler scored once and drew a walk.
Colton Krueger scored once on one hit. Schickert had once hit and drove in three runs. Isaiah Piosalan scored once and drew a walk. Seth Stafford had one hit and drew a walk.
Tyler Olson, Thaddeus Heck and Ryan Mullen all had hits in the game.
Rhinelander 1 concluded the regular season with a 3-9 record. Laser Pros fell to 4-7 in front of Monday night's regular season finale against Merrill Gray.
