Students at Crescent and Pelican elementary schools and Central Intermediate School will soon be hitting the local ski trails after the School District of Rhinelander received a donation of 95 pairs of Nordic skis from the Nordic Rocks program.

A total of seven storage bins full of skis arrived Friday, a welcome sight for Crescent physical education teacher Kris Michlig.

"They're just beautiful," she said. We have enough for our double classes, which is great, and they estimated the cost of these skis at around $9,000, so this is really a wonderful donation."

"We're really excited and the kids are really excited. The poor kindergarteners, they thought we were going to go skiing right away, but we had to tell them we have to figure out where we're going to ski and what we're going to do, but we'll be out there soon."

To help prepare the trails, Mike Preul of Northwoods Nordic Ski Club is going to be assisting in grooming while the physical education teachers begin to get the kids acclimated to the skis.

"We've got snowshoes, so the kids are used to doing outdoor activities, so now we'll expand on that and continue our outdoor education section - finding things to do that are fun in our wonderful Northwoods winter," Michlig said.

"We're really looking forward to having this extra opportunity. What's been amazing is Mike Preul said he would groom us some trails at each of the schools. They also donated a bunch of other resources and books for us to look at and use while the trails are getting ready, and then there's a bunch of outdoor games and things like that for the kids to play. It's always fun to add something new."

Nordic skiing is nothing new for the older kids in the district, but with this donation, the younger kids will now have a chance to glide across the snow.

"This will be the first time for our elementary school kids. I know they've done it at the junior high and senior high, but this will be the first opportunity for the younger kids," Michlig said.

"We've never done it this young, so we're quite excited about that, about getting these kids the opportunity to go out and enjoy the skis."
