It's hard to believe it has been over two decades since J.C. Penney left its downtown location for Lincoln Plaza - time really does fly. When the "new" building was constructed in 1957-1958, it was considered a prime location. With all the conveniences of the modern department store, including air conditioning, it was nearly three times as large as its previous space in the Oneida Hotel block. At the time it was built, there were approximately 1,700 other Penney stores in the United States - growing way beyond the dreams of James Cash Penney when he partnered in a small dry goods business, called The Golden Rule Store, in Kemmerer, Wyo. in 1902.
