The Rhinelander Area Silent Trails Association (RASTA) will host the fourth annual Snowshoe Hare snowshoe race Jan. 10 at Holiday Acres.

Registration will be available from 9 to 10 a.m. for those who didn't preregister.

The fee is $30. Registration includes the event fee, chili lunch, door prizes and a drawing which will include beverages, gloves, hats, coffee, Dion snowshoes etc.

Bystanders must pay a small fee to eat the chili.

The 5K and 10K race will start at 10:30 a.m.

"The 5K is relatively slack," said Mary Lucas, race director and member of the RASTA board of directors. "It's an out-and-back course and the 10K gets very hilly. It goes into the school forest trails at CAVOC [Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom]. It's a beautiful trail, folks have said it's a really fun event."

Approximately 80 people participated in the Snowshoe Hare Snowshoe Race last year, despite less than favorable conditions.

"Last year our conditions were really tough," Lucas said. "It was cold and the snow was dry and it didn't pack for us. It was like trying to do this in sugar sand.

"One of the things we worked really hard on last year was to try to get more community participation locally and I think we did that," she added. "At least a third of our participants were from the Rhinelander area so that was really neat."

The Snowshoe Hare Snowshoe Race is part of the Braveheart series.

"It's what I would call a non-competitive series," Lucas said. "It's just trying to encourage participation in the sport, so when the series has their kind of wrap-up in March they award prizes based on the number of events you participate in, not how fast you do or anything."

All proceeds will go to RASTA to help maintain the trails in the Rhinelander area.

RASTA maintains the Washburn trail system, cross country ski trail, hiking and biking trails and Mud Lake near Camp Tesomas.
