Fighting fires is difficult, and even more so when firefighters have to deal with snow and frigid temperatures in the middle of the night. The January 1923 fire which destroyed Wiesman's Dry Goods Store in Rhinelander could have rapidly spread to other buildings on the west side of South Brown Street if not for the quick response of the local fire department. Even the street lights were covered with ice as hoses sprayed water on the building. Amazingly, a glass case on the second floor survived and the dresses, coats and suits inside were salvaged. The business block, which also contained the offices of Brown Bros. Lumber Company, was later replaced with a brick structure and is now the home of Oneida Title and Abstract, Inc.
