RN: Please explain your job?
Theiler: I'm a town of Pelican Firefighter and Medical First Responder. I am also part of the Emergency Response Team for Expera, Rhinelander mill, where we handle fires, confined space entries and rescue, medical emergencies and hazardous materials incidents.
RN: How long have you held this job?
Theiler: 13 years at Pelican and 22 years at the Rhinelander mill.
RN: What is your favorite part of the job?
Theiler: Having the skills and knowledge to help someone when they really need us. The people that call are very happy to see us. Our fire department gets many thank yous.
RN: What is the biggest misconception about the job?
Theiler: There are many. Here are a few. Most calls for help are non-emergency even though we respond with lights and a siren. People think we are only called to fires when, in fact, we respond to everything from ice, water, snowmobile, wilderness, swift water rescues and carbon monoxide alarms, just to name a few. We also spend a good majority of our time doing public education at the local schools. In addition we train, train and retrain.
RN: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Theiler: I enjoy backpack camping, kayaking, snowshoeing and hiking.
