Hodag Lanes in Rhinelander was packed to the rafters Sunday as the family, friends and coworkers of Kory Dahlvig gathered to participate in a nine-pin no tap bowling tournament held in memory of the fallen police officer.

Dahlvig, a Rhinelander native and Vilas County Sheriff's Deputy, was killed in an on-duty traffic accident in April 2010. After their son's death, Ron and Cherri Dahlvig set up a scholarship fund in his name that supports students in the criminal justice-law enforcement program at Nicolet Area Technical College.

"Everything we make goes to his scholarship that we set up at Nicolet College," Cherri Dahlvig said. "It's for a criminal justice student that's in their second year. (Kory) would love that. Being an officer was the most important thing to him, second only to his family, so I know he would like that."

The bowling event, now in its fifth year, included lots of bowling, plenty of stories, raffles, prizes, food and drink. One thing about this year's bowling event was different, however. It was held on a Sunday rather than a Saturday.

While the event has always been well attended, Dahlvig said she heard from a lot of people who indicated they would be able to attend if the fundraiser were moved to Sunday.

The change made a huge difference.

"This is the most we've ever had," Dahlvig said. "We've had maybe five teams in the past but this year we had to book almost the entire alley expect for a couple lanes. This year, people turned out in force in a way we haven't ever seen. People have always been incredibly supportive of honoring Kory, but we tried something new this year and we had it on a Sunday. People told us they would come if it was on a Sunday when they didn't have to work, so we figured OK we'll try it. I guess it was the key because it is so well attended this year. We're so pleased and blessed."

The Dahlvigs also host the Run to Remember at Nicolet each year to help raise funds for the scholarship. Both events continue to grow in attendance each year, which is something that Cherri Dahlvig said shows her that her son will never be forgotten.

"It makes me feel so happy because that was my one thing. I wanted to make sure that Kory was always remembered," Dahlvig said. "This shows me that Kory will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered. And that makes me feel something I can't describe. It's amazing. It makes me super happy."
