As part of our continuing effort to highlight interesting people in the community, the River News is offering readers a periodic feature entitled Someone You Should Know. Our reporters are compiling short profiles of individuals who are making valuable contributions to the community through their employment or volunteer work. Today we feature Oneida County Treasurer Kris Ostermann.

RN: Please explain your job.

Ostermann: The county treasurer collects property taxes. If those property taxes aren't paid then she, or he, would do a foreclosure on the property. We also give out a lot of information as far as land information, people need to know how much their property is assessed for, the descriptions of their property. We might have records of deeds going back - the history - we may have a little bit of that. We only keep the last 15 years so. We can only give so much information but people do come to us for that. We also receipt all money and we handle the investments, the bank accounts, do a lot of the bookwork for the county as far as with the banks. We maintain the lottery credit certifications. We help the town treasurers and clerks with their tax portion of their job. We do a lot with the property taxes and the county as far as their banking. Another part of the job is to pay the bills for the county too.

RN: How long have you held this job?

Ostermann: I've been in the office for 27 years and I've been the treasurer for the last 6 years.

RN: What is your favorite part of the job?

Ostermann: Helping people, helping people find information, that's probably my favorite part.

RN: What is the biggest misconception about the job?

Ostermann: That we assess the properties, that we put the value on the properties and tell people how much their taxes will be. Actually, the town treasurer and the county treasurer do not have anything to do with that. We actually collect the taxes. We send out the bills and we collect the taxes, but we don't actually have anything to do with putting the values on that, that's done by other parts of the town like the assessors and other individuals at the town level.

RN: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Ostermann: I like to go to the Y and I also am a high school and junior high gymnastics official. I've done that for 40 years although this my be my last year of doing that. I love doing that, but it's getting to the point where I have to do a lot of traveling and I want to quit doing it. I do have grandkids, so we Skype a lot with grandkids. I like to do photography.
