Two Pelican Elementary School students have raised a significant amount of money for the Oneida County Humane Society (OCHS).

Camille Bandow, a third-grader, and Morgan Whitaker, a second-grader, got the idea after participating in a Christmas fundraiser.

"We sold crafts that we made to our family members and close friends," Camille said of their Christmas donation.

From there the idea grew.

"They donated (the Christmas) money to the shelter and then they thought that they would challenge the school to see what would happen," said Stephanie Pudlowski, multi-age teacher at Pelican Elementary School.

The girls created a newsletter, which was approved by the principal, to send to families.

They decorated collection jars and placed them in all the classrooms. The jars were available from Jan. 20 to Jan. 28 and the money quickly piled in.

"They went and collected the money, took care of all of that - amazingly worth $600," Pudlowski said.

The girls presented the check to the shelter officials Friday morning.

"(The donation is) a great help, the kids did an excellent job," said Karen Norling, assistant director of the OCHS. "It'll be used to take care of the animals and it's nice to see all of these kids that love them and care so much."

The donation will be used for extended veterinarian care, toys, treats, supplies, food and other items.
