History was made at Hodag Lanes Feb. 2.

Shirts, Signs & Designs, a team that regularly competes in the Monday Night Keglers League, broke the city record with an impressive 3,647 series, 12 pins higher than the previous mark.

Mike Bourcier bowled a perfect 300 in the record-setting performance and Joel Shaltis nearly equaled the feat, rolling a 299.

Bourcier said he enjoyed bowling the perfect game and was happy to contribute in that way to his team's record-setting performance, but frankly, he's used to that kind of a score.

"It's just another 300," Bourcier said. "This was my 37th 300. It was fun though. Everything was going good and it went down."

Shaltis echoed his teammate's nonchalance, despite falling a single pin shy of perfection.

"It's pretty much the way it works out," he said. "I've had 300s myself and plenty of 290-whatevers. It's just the way it happened. I threw a slightly quicker shot and left a soft 10. It just kind of happens and there's nothing you can do about it. It's still a great game in my mind."

According to statistics kept by the lanes, members of the team had the three highest games bowled that night - Rick Larson added a 279. The team also posted three of the top four individual series - Bourcier's 801, Larson's 761 and Shaltis' 753.

Brian Bloomquist rolled a 694 series and Glenn Lasowski had a 638 to round out the team's scores.

While the group was excited about breaking the city record, it wasn't exactly a new sensation for them.

"We held the city record before at 3,635," Bourcier said. "We got together on a normal league night and that's the way it went. It's always great to break your own record. We have a pretty powerful team. It's a solid group of bowlers. It's a feat and you're always shooting to break the records. We know we can do better and it's an exciting and fun feat."

The group enjoys plenty of continuity on Monday nights. They've been together for nearly a decade and have been a formidable group from the very start.

"Rick, Glenn, Brian and I have been bowling together on this same team for eight years here," Bourcier said. "Joel subs for us. Our other member, Dick (Bourcier), my dad, is gone on vacation, so Joel is filling in. He's been bowling for the last three years with us as our sixth man. We're a good group."

A new city record is a nice accomplishment - and one they're proud of - but Bourcier said the group has its sights set on a bigger prize. They want to be the last team standing when the league's champion is decided.

"Right now we're tied for first in our league, so we have a chance," Bourcier said. "We have another 10 more weeks of bowling here. Anything can happen, but we have a good shot. We're always a fairly good contender."
