Hildebrand Furniture Store sported a brand new facade, covering up its original brick siding, in this photo from around 1977. The building had suffered smoke damage and discoloration after a 1968 fire which destroyed the neighboring buildings to the north. The new siding, considered modern at the time, was removed by the owners of Peggy's Emporium in 2008. The building was constructed in 1926 for Hildebrand Furniture and Undertaking and featured a balcony which was not only used to display furniture, but also hosted a resting room for women. Probably the most fascinating feature, however, was the large freight and passenger elevator which likely gave many Rhinelander citizens their first elevator ride.
