Built as the Hotel Alpine in 1893, the Wonder Hotel sat on the corner of Pelham and Anderson Streets for 86 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1979. It was known as the Rhinelander Hotel in 1937 when the building was remodeled and the air-conditioned cocktail lounge was renamed the "Wonder Bar." Ten years later, it became the Wonder Hotel and Bar and featured dining in its "Circus Room" with home-cooked meals provided by Mrs. Ann Shelp.
