Local writers featured as part of Rhinelander District Library's author series
From the authors' website (http://hodag writers.com/): "Mosaic is a novel made up of many colorful pieces, bits of history taken out of time and assembled with heat and humor. It's based on a true story, but the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty."
"In the early 1980s two mosaics purchased by Art Termini from the Vatican Mosaic Studio in Rome were stolen from his home in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. The FBI, along with local and state police, tried in vain to find the thief. ... Follow Art from his first kiss to a liaison in the bathroom of a palazzo belonging to the Prince of Afghanistan. Learn how an intrepid reporter tracks down the elusive Art after another of Art's purchases ...is sold at Christie's Auction House in New York in 2012 for $200,000. Meet Robert McNamara, Mayor Henry Maier of Milwaukee, Italian Grand Prix driver Rayme DeTor, ... just a few of the characters Art meets in a life well lived."
Joseph Catalano was born in 1934 in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward, an enclave of 98 percent southern Italians. His father ran a wholesale produce business that he inherited from his father who founded it in 1884. All of the brothers worked in the family business, and those who served in the military returned to the business afterwards. Catalano's many adventures, living "a life well lived," are chronicled in "Mosaic."
Michael Skubal was born in Chicago. His parents were both from Rhinelander, and returned there after the war. He graduated from Rhinelander High School, received a bachelor's degree in Creative Communication from UW-Green Bay, and a master's degree in Liberal Studies from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. Skubal was an actor for many years. He turned to directing, then to writing, working as a reporter and columnist for the Rhinelander Daily News for a number of years. He considers himself a "storyteller," and has been able to weave quite a story, with Catalano's inspiration and assistance, the library said in a press release.
Skubal and Catalano's book will be available for purchase and signing, and refreshments will be served. For more information, call the Rhinelander District Library at (715) 365-1070.
