It's been a bizarre Decembe in the Northwoods, with frequent rain and only occasional snow and ice. Boom Lake is mostly open water with a thin layer of ice stretching about 15 feet from the shore. This photo was shot on Dec. 23. It was a warm 40 degrees at the time with a gentle 10 mph breeze coming in from the east and a light rain. According to www.weather.com's almanac, the normal high temperature on Dec. 23 is 24 degrees with a low of 6 degrees. This year we were close to breaking the record high of 44 degrees, which was set in 1957. Of course, by Thursday, the Northwoods received a few inches of snow just in time for Christmas.
