Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center accepts AV-W School book drive donation
"This is our ninth annual book drive and so far we have distributed more than 11,000 books for area children in need," said students from Tracey Scharbarth's sixth-grade class. "We do this because learning to read is critical to a child's future success in school and in life."
A child without access to books has fewer opportunities to become an engaged and capable reader, but unfortunately, books are scarce for many children, Marshfield Clinic noted in a press release announcing the donation.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, avid reading promotes speech, confidence, memorization, better skills acquisition, superior grades and a desirable life as measured by income, profession and employment. Children who read 20 minutes per day typically finish in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.
"We are grateful to accept this wonderful donation as it supports our ongoing Reach Out and Read project to provide our pediatric patients with books," said Kelly Rydeski, manager, Pediatrics Department, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center. "We are happy to provide a literary rich environment in our pediatric waiting room."
