Rhinelander ArtStart will feature the work of painter Marketa Sivek and mixed-media cut-paper artist Michael Velliquette in its fall exhibitions opening in the ArtStart Galleries Friday, Sept. 4. Both artists will be present for an opening reception, featuring a wine tasting, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

An "Arty Harvest Party" including music, dancing, a scavenger hunt, and food and beverages for the whole family will follow the opening reception beginning at 6 p.m. Additionally, the work of floral designers from Trig's Floral and Home, Forth Floral, Hanson's Garden Village and Lori's Flower Cottage will be on display as "Art in Bloom."

Sivek, born in Vsetin, Moravia, and raised under Communist rule, experienced the influence of the Soviet Union on the freedoms and lifestyles of the people of her country, according to an ArtStart press release. She immigrated to the United States after the "Velvet Revolution," dedicating herself to painting. She is self-taught, and her work is described as "a constant evolution of the growth of feelings and sensations emerging from newfound experiences."

Her paintings are shown in galleries in Chicago, St. Louis, and Atlanta as well as in private collections. She currently resides in Chicago.

Velliquette is best known for his works with cut, painted paper, but he has also created art through drawing, collage and sculpture. He is a faculty associate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Miami and Seattle.

His work has also been shown overseas in Paris and Bergen, Norway, and is part of permanent collections of the Art Museum of South Texas, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Racine Art Museum, the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Boston Children's Hospital, and the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Themes of Velliquette's work include the nature of matter, sensation, perception, reaction and consciousness.

Color plays a powerful role in his work and acts to convey a sense of optical fullness, and aesthetic of plentitude. Examples feature recurring motifs such as hands, eyes, flowers, planets, mandalas, and goofy smiling faces.

Sivek's exhibit, "Wind," is co-sponsored by Rhinelander Woman's Club and WXPR Public Radio.

Velliquette's "Everything Is a Miracle" exhibit is co-sponsored by The Star Journal and Hodag Buyer's Guide and WXPR Public Radio.

ArtStart Gallery, 68 S. Stevens St. in Rhinelander, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
