Early lead holds in Snowhawks 19-15 win over coaches
One game remains in snowshoe baseball season
By By Lindsey Nylund-
The weather was so cold it felt more like the game was being played in winter, when snowshoes actually come in handy, than a summer contest played on a sawdust-covered field.
The Snowhawks came away victorious after the team got an early jump over the Coaches and held strong long enough to muscle out the win in a close contest.
Jeff Smith, the Snowhawks playing manager, said the team is not used to playing in such cold temperatures.
"We're not used to weather like this in August, but it was a fun game," he said. "Everybody got hits and (the coaches) got a bunch of hits to make it interesting."
After the coaches were unable to put any runs on the board to open the game, the Snowhawks opened the bottom half of the first with five runs.
The Snowhawks would hold the lead for the rest of the game but the Coaches made a dash at a comeback late in the game.
After six innings of play, the Snowhawks led 19-6.
The coaches scored four runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth, and managed to prevent the Snowhawks from scoring again in the final three innings, but fell four runs short.
Smith said a few well-timed hits were the reason the coaches made such a comeback.
"The couple key hits that they had, that were good, brought guys across the base," he said.
For the final game of the season the team will face Wisconsin Public Service and Smith said the team is not sure what to expect.
"They'll come prepared. We never know who they have. We don't know any of their players. The scouting report is not in yet," Smith joked.
Next Monday's game against WPS will support the local food pantry. Spectators are encouraged to bring canned goods for donation. Play begins at 7:30 p.m.
