Folk fusion musician Greg Herriges and his New Whirled Band will kick off the Nicolet College 2015-16 Creative Arts Series when these stellar musicians take to the Nicolet stage at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12.

"Greg's sheer talent and versatility make him and his band the perfect musicians to kick off the 2015-16 series," said Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall.

"I saw him playing multiple guitars last year at Wausau's Concert on the Square, and I knew we needed to get him up here," Nuttal said. "We're fortunate to be able to bring in his whole trio."

The band's hallmark is its ability to weave together the best sounds from Eastern and Western cultures, as well as the multiple instruments they can play, Nuttall noted.

Along with being a gifted performer, Herriges is also a composer and author, having written a multitude of songs and six instructional books on how to play guitar in several different genres.

Tickets for the Greg Herriges' New Whirled Band are $12 and can be ordered online at nicoletlive.com or by calling (715) 365-4646.

The Creative Arts Series has two components: Nicolet Live!, which includes events such as concerts, plays, films, and other theatrical presentations; and the Nicolet Art Gallery, which this year will feature nine exhibits by a wide variety of artists.

This year the Nicolet Live! portion of the Creative Arts Series will include 15 different concerts. Highlights include the fast-rising Trout Steak Revival Sept. 24, the world music Israeli band Baladino Oct. 2, the Saturday Night Live-inspired comedic improv musical ensemble Baby Wants Candy Feb. 13, and the ever-popular a cappella group the UW Madhatters March 12.

Nicolet Live! will also include three nights of short films that cover the romance, horror, and environmental genres; a photography presentation, and three 'theatrical performances.

The latter will include two plays by the Nicolet Players: the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol" in December and the romantic comedy "Outside Mullingar" in May; and the children's play "The Monster Who Ate My Peas" in February.

Auditions for "A Christmas Carol" will take place Oct. 19 and 20.

Since its beginning 18 years ago, Nicolet Live! has always focused on bringing in a diverse cross-section of events, Nuttall explained.

"Our goal has always been to bring in acts that people in the Northwoods might not otherwise be able to see," he said. "And we strive to book many different types of performances so there is at least one show - hopefully more - that appeals to everyone."

The Nicolet College Art Gallery will start its 31st year on Sept. 19 with the exhibit Fiber Friends, featuring the works of non-traditional quilt artists from northern and central Wisconsin.

Other exhibits in 2015-16 will include works from the members of the Lakeland and Manito art leagues, the Nicolet College Student Art Exhibit, the Northwood Turners woodworking group, and the 29th Annual Northern National Art Competition, along with other installations.

The 2015 Northern National Art Competition is currently on display through Sept. 12. Admission is free to all exhibits.

The Nicolet College Theatre and the Art Gallery are located in the Learning Resources Center on the Nicolet Campus.
