Northwoods basketball players compete in AAU season
The team, named Hoop Dreams, had eight returning players and four new players.
The four new players brought the team up to a higher level of competitiveness that allowed the team to be even more successful this year, as evidenced by their 18-3 record.
The team participated in five tournaments throughout the state. They took three championships, one second-place and one third-place finish.
The team was comprised of 12 players from seven different area high schools:
• Oliver Barnes, Mosinee;
• Jake Bolanda, Mosinee;
• Nick Bolanda, Mosinee;
• Tommy Borta, Wausau West;
• Reeve Craig, Rhinelander;
• Tavian Doud, Lakeland;
• Osy Ekwueme, Medford;
• Ronnie Peterson, Northland Pines;
• Zach Raeder, Wausau West;
• Brian Timm, Merrill;
• Tarrin St. Germaine, Mercer and
• Jake Wokatsch, Wausau West.
The team's first tournament of the summer was the 26th annual Under Armour Memorial Day Classic held in Menomonie May 23 and 24. The team won its first game and then lost the second game by six points against the team that would win the championship. They won their next two games and ended up taking third place in the tournament.
They scored there season and team record high game of 92 points and beat that game by 63 total points.
Hoop Dream's second tournament was at Just-A-Game Fieldhouse June 13 in Wisconsin Dells. They won all thee games and ended up champions for their bracket. They outscored their opponents by a total of 41 points.
The third tournament was HLC Summer Shootout No. 1 held June 20 and 21 in Fond Du Lac. The team only had 6 players for their first game, which it lost. They won the next two games to reach the championship, setting up a rematch of the first game of the tournament.
Hoop Dreams exacted some revenge and won the championship.
The fourth tournament was the 27th annual Great Lakes Shootout held June 27 and 28 in Menomonie. The team won all four games and ended up champions. They outscored their opponents by a total of 61 points. They beat another central Wisconsin team by 36 points.
The fifth and final tournament was HLC Summer Shootout No. 2 held Aug. 1 and 2 in Appleton. The team won three of its four games. They lost their second game by only four points but outscored the other teams by a total of 67 points. Hoop Dreams took 2nd place in the tournament. They played extremely well in the intense heat and humidity in the gyms.
