Golf event reaches goal of $100K for Alzheimer's research
North Star Resource Group partner and Rhinelander native Brett Vander Bloemen organized the event in honor of his mother, Liz, who after a valiant battle with the disease, passed away in September 2014. In January 2015, Vander Bloemen also tragically lost his father. After losing both parents in a matter of months, hosting the charitable golf event for the second year in a row was about the furthest thing on his mind.
"I'm really happy I did it. I have to admit, I was reluctant but am very happy with the way everything went. I think they would be proud. Although my mom passed away from Alzheimer's, I firmly believe it played a role in the death of my father as well. I am very committed to helping find some hope!," Vander Bloemen said.
Thanks in part to a matching donation from the Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation, the event again was able to raise $100,000. All funds will be donated to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
