Lizzy Taylor is breathing new life into an old establishment, the Tamarack Tap, located at 5533 U.S. Highway 47 in Lake Tomahawk.

Taylor bought the restaurant in May and it opened officially July 1.

The Tamarack Tap was originally established in 1938, and people used to feed bears out back, Taylor said. The establishment has been through several owners since 1938, Taylor said.

"We put a new state-of-the-art kitchen in before we opened, so we can offer a full menu," Taylor said.

The bar and dining room have been updated as well.

"We've been very busy with our food sales," Taylor said, adding that her goal is to keep the quality consistent.

"We're going to expand our menu in the future, possibly some broasted chicken and do some Mexican in the fall," Taylor said. "Hours will probably expand a little bit during snowmobile season."

Current hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday 2 p.m. until close, and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Only pizza is available from the menu on Sundays.

Of the current menu, Taylor said the ribs are very popular. The ribs are made fresh daily, with house barbecue sauce and sell out nearly every night, Taylor said.

"Friday fish fry is huge, it's very, very busy here," Taylor said. "We have beer-battered, cajun or parmesan-encrusted walleye or cod."

"Everything is homemade from scratch," Taylor said. The Tamarack Tap serves baked French onion soup every night, and will have chili in the winter.

Other unique items on the menu include yellow-fin tuna encrusted with pistachio and served with the Tamarack Tap's signature raspberry glaze, ginger and wasabi.

"The recipes kind of come from all over," Taylor said. "Some of them come from California, because I lived there for a year."

The bar segment of the establishment is unique as well, Taylor said. It features a drink board for patrons to leave drinks for other patrons to enjoy at a later date.

No bar/restaurant would be complete without burgers, and fresh, never frozen, beef burgers are on the menu as well.

A customer favorite burger is the Snowhawk, a burger topped with bacon, house barbecue sauce and pepper jack cheese, Taylor said.

The grand opening is coming up Sept. 13. The doors open at 11 a.m. for the event. There will be smoked meats as Taylor just bought a new smoker.

"We're going to start smoking pork and beef, and maybe some fish," Taylor said.

The grand opening will also feature drawings, Taylor said.

Taylor expects to celebrate Packers games at the Tamarack Tap with raffles, drink specials, Packers Bingo, and drawings.
