Children learn the importance of healthy habits at Let's Go 5-2-1-0 event
By Kayla Thomason-
"Lets Go 5-2-1-0 is a national program that recognizes kids being healthy by every day activity, which would be eating five fruits and vegetables a day, two hours or less of screen time, one hour of activity and zero sugary drinks. Instead drink water and milk," said Blaine Conley, pediatric RN case manager for the clinic.
She and the rest of her pediatric group hosted the event, which also included booths offering information about sunscreen safety, washing hands and drinking eight glasses of water a day.
The children also had a book read to them as a way to demonstrate the value of reduced screen time.
The Girl Scouts also helped out by playing Simon Says with the children.
Before the little ones left they got a healthy snack of fruit and granola bars with water or milk to wash it down.
The event was a hit with families.
"It's pretty cool, it's good," said Amy Sletti, who brought her two children, Olin, 7, and Austen, 5.
Sletti said she liked that the booths had information on various activities in the Rhinelander area.
"(My kids are) enjoying it, they had a good time," Sletti said. "(They) kind of got more relaxed as they got into it. I think it's a nice event for the community so hopefully they'll be able to keep doing it each year, get more people out here."
Sletti and others felt that the event helped solidify what they and the rest of their immediate family teach their children or grandchildren.
"It's really nice to hear other people reinforce (the stuff we do at home), especially about the sunscreen and not drinking juice," Sletti said.
"Oh I think it's great, anything that's offered to kids for them to hear it from important people, other than just their immediate family, kind of sinks in more, so yes I'm very, very happy that Ministry does this for children," said Karen Amstadt, grandmother of Conley's children, Stella, 3, and Levi, 5.
Amstadt liked that they also had handouts and gifts for the children.
Conley said Let's Go 5-2-1-0 may become an annual event.
