James Beck Cancer Center to host annual Celebration of Life
The Celebration of Life is for those whose lives have been touched by cancer. The event honors cancer survivors for their strength and courage; recognizes the contributions of their families and friends; promotes awareness that knowledge, hope and inspiration can help beat cancer; and to emphasize the fact that cancer survivors can live active, productive lives even though they still face many challenges.
This year's guest speaker is Mark Bryan from Phillips. Bryan was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2008 and prostate cancer in 2010. He retired from dairy farming in 2011 and has remained on his farm where he and his wife now raise Siamese cats. He is very active in his community, including portraying many interesting characters in plays put on by Northwood Players, LTD a theater group based in Price County.
Following the ceremony there will be a butterfly release, an open house which will feature tours of the James Beck Cancer Center, an ice cream social, educational displays and support materials, and a dedication of the newly placed commemorative bricks and bench will be held. Light refreshments will be served.
"We all know someone who is in the process of living with, through, or beyond cancer," cancer center officials said in a press release. "Today, there are an estimated 11.7 million cancer survivors in the United States. This has increased from three million survivors from 1971. With knowledge, hope, camaraderie, compassion, and faith, people are living active and productive lives after a cancer diagnosis. Surviving cancer is an attitude about living life everyday despite the challenges cancer brings."
